• straight X - ray - to investigate an associated osteitis

• MRI or myelogram - to identify the site precisely

• LP - CSF shows an increased white cell count, typically, polymorphonuclear, but may be normal

• bloods - often shows leucocytosis in the peripheral blood and a raised ESR
