Last reviewed 08/2021
Idiopathic portal hypertension describes the presentation of portal hypertension and variceal bleeding without cirrhosis. Histologically, the liver shows fibrous bands.
The aetiology is unknown but toxic agents such as arsenic and vinyl chloride have been implicated. It is a relatively frequent cause of portal hypertension in Asia.
The liver lesion does not progress so the prognosis is good.
