laboratory findings

  • excessive total body iron manifest as increased serum iron and/or hepatocellular iron

  • mild erythrocytosis

  • urine shows marked increase of uroporphyrin but only slight increase in coproporphyrin; may exhibit characteristic pink red fluorescence when illuminated with a Wood's lamp

  • slight increase in coproporphyrin in stool

  • increased plasma protoporphyrin
  • liver function tests may be abnormal - elevated transaminase and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase levels (1)
