Cervical infection should be treated with doxycycline, given to both partners.

Persistent chronic cervicitis requires cryotherapy if antibiotic therapy fails.

Low cervical mucus pH associated with a low number of active sperm, sperm migration and viability, may be treated by a cervical douche with sodium bicarbonate 30 minutes before intercourse.

Poor mucus quality should be treated by:

  • a small dose of oestrogen from day 7 until ovulation has been used but requires expert advice; or

  • intrauterine insemination of sperm - to bypass the mucus
