affective personality disorders

Last reviewed 01/2018

Patients with an affective personality disorder have a lifelong abnormality of mood.

If the tendency is towards depressed mood then a depressive personality disorder is present.

If the tendency is towards elation then a hyperthymic personality disorder is present.

If there are marked shifts from high to low mood, this may indicate the presence of a cyclothymic personality disorder.

The affective personality disorders are difficult to differentiate from recurrent full-blown affective disorders.
