fibrinolytics in reduction of risk of thromboembolism

Last reviewed 01/2018

Fibrinolytic activity in both the blood and vein wall has been shown to be impaired in patients with acute DVT's. This may enhance the formation of thrombi.

Unfortunately, drugs which enhance fibrinolytic activity, e.g. phenformin and ethyloestrenol, have not been shown to be effective at preventing DVT.
