These include:

  • urinary sugar
  • serum calcium
  • 24 hour urine volume
  • MSU
  • urine and plasma osmolarity:
    • a relatively concentrated urine suggests an osmotic diuresis e.g. diabetes mellitus
    • a relatively dilute urine suggests lack of ADH action e.g. diabetes insipidus
    • a urine osmolarity within 50 mmol/Kg of that of plasma suggests chronic renal failure
  • water deprivation test
