Selenium is an essential, trace mineral. It is found in seafood, meat, chicken, grain cereals, egg yolk, milk, mushrooms, and garlic. Gastrointestinal absorption may be followed by excretion in either faeces or urine.

It is an antioxidant within glutathione peroxidase. It is also required for the activity of iodothyronine deiodinase. It prevents chromosome breakage and may assume a role in preventing certain birth defects.
