Clinical features depend on host susceptibility and the number of organisms ingested. Patients may be asymptomatic. Incubation period may vary from two days to over six weeks.

Listeriosis is recognised in three groups:

• pregnancy and their fetuses
• neonates
• immuno-compromised and the elderly
