The formation of the initial platelet plug is an important component of normal haemostasis.

Platelet disorders may lead to a bleeding disorder, the causes include:

  • too few platelets - thrombocytopaenia
  • abnormal platelet function - thrombocytopathy:
    • congenital
    • acquired

Thrombocytopaenia accounts for the majority of cases.
