treatment of RA of ankle and hindfoot

For RA in the foot and ankle, the synovitic stage is treated with splintage and injections of methylprednisolone.
A lightweight below-knee caliper with an inside supporting strap enables restoration of stability and may be worn almost indefinitely.
Surgical treatment may involve synovectomy and, if necessary, tendon transfer. In late stage disease, arthrodesis of the ankle and tarsal joints will abolish pain and restore modest function.
