common causes of proteinuria in a diabetic

These include:

  • urinary tract infection
  • poorly controlled diabetes - at the time of diagnosis a diabetic patient may have proteinuria which settles with improved glycaemic control.
  • acute fever
  • exercise - protein excretion increased.
  • hypertension
  • heart failure
  • artefactual e.g. vaginal discharge.
  • diabetic nephropathy
