Furunculosis usually responds to simple measures such as warm skin compresses and good local hygiene. Dressings or poultices (e.g. magnesium sulphate paste) may encourage spontaneous discharge.
Resistant cases may require:
- incision and drainage - for large furuncles
- antibiotics e.g. flucloxacillin, erythromycin - in case of fever or extensive cellulitis (1)
For recurrent cases, eradication of the staphylococcal carriage using antibacterial agents is helpful (1).
