examination of the eyes

Examination of the eyes may reveal:

  • yellow sclerae suggests jaundice, possibly due to:
    • hepatic engorgement due to cardiac failure
    • haemolysis over prosthetic heart valves
  • xanthelasma are intracutaneous deposits of cholesterol which may be a normal finding or may be a sign of type II or III hyperlipidaemia
  • conjunctival pallor suggests anaemia (1)
