Complications most commonly arise following fracture dislocation:

  • there may be anterior or posterior shoulder dislocation, requiring closed or open reduction
  • avascular necrosis of the humeral head following fracture of the humeral neck
  • axillary nerve and brachial plexus injury
  • shoulder joint stiffness - due to soft tissue damage and haemorrhage
  • malunion
