lateral mediastinal lymph nodes (anteroinferior)
Last reviewed 01/2018
The lateral mediastinal nodes of the anteroinferior group are sited on the superior surface of the diaphragm at the points at which the phrenic nerves traverse on each side. They receive afferent lymphatics from the:
- local region of the diaphragm
- superior region of the pleura
- superior abdominal viscera
The lateral group are freely connected to:
- anterior nodes of the anteroinferior mediastinal group
- superior anterior mediastinal nodes
- thoracic duct
These provide a route by which lymph returns to the venous system within the neck.
