high voltage electric injury

High voltage electric injury is defined as that resulting from an electric source of greater than a thousand volts. Sources include:

• electricity power cables
• power stations and substations

The latter sources can produce potential differences in excess of 11000 volts. This amount of energy is capable of arcing for short distances and hence an injured individual must not be approached until the surrounding area is known to be safe.
