therapeutic indications

These are primarily:

  • intrathecal drug administration:
    • cytotoxic agents for leukaemia or lymphoma
    • antibiotics or antifungal agents

  • removal of cerebrospinal fluid:
    • in benign intracranial hypertension, lumbar puncture may be used to remove large volumes of CSF in order to rapidly reduce CSF pressure whilst waiting for other therapies to take effect
