therapeutic indications

These are primarily:
- intrathecal drug administration:
- cytotoxic agents for leukaemia or lymphoma
- antibiotics or antifungal agents
- removal of cerebrospinal fluid:
- in benign intracranial hypertension, lumbar puncture may be used to remove large volumes of CSF in order to rapidly reduce CSF pressure whilst waiting for other therapies to take effect
