imperforate anus without fistula

Last reviewed 01/2018

In patients with imperforate anus without the presence of a fistula, the rectum is a blind ending. A colostomy is formed in the neonatal period before a definitive corrective procedure, e.g. a posterior sagittal anorectoplasty, is carried out. In the meantime, associated malformations are excluded.

Prognosis is good as the sacrum is usually well-formed in most patients; 70% achieve normal bowel movements, although soiling is common.
