These include:

  • headache - as a consequence of CSF removal. It is worse when sitting up or standing, and is more common with larger needles or multiple attempts at LP. If it is persistent, CT may be needed to exclude subdural haematoma

  • dry tap - most commonly, due to poor technique. Other causes include previous surgery, infection or anatomical anomalies

  • infection

  • cerebellar herniation - due to raised intracranial pressure
