hair loss
Last reviewed 08/2023
Alopecia is a chronic inflammatory dermatological disorder which affects the hair follicles resulting in loss of hair on the head and sometimes on the body as well.
The aetiology of alopecia is unknown but it is considered to be an autoimmune disease with environmental and genetic influence.
It is not a life threatening disease but due to the limited success of medical treatment in alopecia, it can be associated with considerable psychological distress (anxiety and depression) (1).
Alopecia can be considered in terms of localized or diffuse hair loss
