Coexistent bacterial infection may occur with onychomycosis, and it should be remembered that fungal infection may occur in the presence of pre-existing psoriasis or eczema.

Onychomycosis might be confused with the following:

  • bacterial nail infection
  • onychogryphosis
  • psoriasis
  • eczema
  • Beau's lines
  • lichen planus
  • alopecia
  • onycholysis (1)
  • yellow nail syndrome
  • twenty-nail dystrophy
  • leuconychia
  • trauma (1,2)
