Possible causes of secondary dysmenorrhoea include:

  • endometriosis
  • pelvic inflammatory disease
  • submucosal fibroids
  • endometrial polyps
  • pelvic congestion syndrome
  • intra-uterine contraceptive device
  • ovarian cysts
  • adenomyosis
  • past history of sexual abuse or other psychological problems
