endomyocardial fibrosis and Loeffler's endocarditis
Last reviewed 01/2018
- endomyocardial fibrosis occurs in the tropics
- endomyocardial fibrosis may occur in association with Loeffler's endocarditis in temperate zones.
- in Loeffler's disease there are high eosinophil counts or 15 x 10^9/dl or more.
- cardiac damage is greater in Loeffler's endocarditis and has been attributed to the liberation of the cationic protein from the eosinophilic granule. Three processes occur - intracavitary thrombosis, endocardial necrosis, and eventual fibrosis - which may overlap.
