The nerve supply of the pericardium depends on the layer in question:
- fibrous pericardium: phrenic nerve
- parietal layer of serous pericardium: phrenic nerve
- visceral layer of serous pericardium: no innervation
In addition, fibres to the sympathetic trunks may carry the sensation of pain.
