Glycosuria is classically associated with diabetes mellitus. Other causes of glycosuria include:
- impaired glucose tolerance in thyrotoxicosis, acromegaly, and after gastrectomy
- raised blood sugar levels secondary to raised adrenaline levels e.g. in phaeochromocytoma, anxiety states, strenuous activity
- gross cerebral injury or haemorrhage
- severe infection, especially staphylococcal may cause impaired glucose tolerance and glycosuria
- reduced renal threshold for glucose e.g. pregnancy
- renal tubular problems, for example anything which may cause a Fanconi syndrome
