Rehabilitation and maintenance of appropriate social skills and work habits should be started early, and pursued with as much vigor as possible, subject to the limit posed by the risk that too much pressure will cause deterioration.

The patient should be encouraged to leave hospital as soon as possible since a prolonged hospital stay is likely to increase social withdrawal. There has been a gradual development of follow-up services based on halfway houses and group homes, sheltered workshops and social clubs, with continuing support of the family and liason with employers.
