intrapartum infection
Last reviewed 01/2018
When the membranes rupture, the foetus may be invaded by flora of the birth canal. This is particularly significant when prolonged rupture of the membranes has occurred.
Organisms which commonly then infect the foetus include:
- group B streptococcus
- E. coli
- Listeria monocytogenes
Less commonly, infection may occur with:
- Neisseria gonorrhoea
- Herpes virus
- Candida albicans
