Possible causes of splinter haemorrhages include:

  • trauma, especially in manual workers
  • infective endocarditis
  • Trichinella spiralis infestation
  • vasculitides:
    • rheumatoid arthritis
    • systemic lupus erythematosus
    • polyarteritis nodosa
  • sepsis elsewhere in the body
  • haematological malignancy
  • profound anaemia
