This is the absence of intercourse; the penis fails to penetrate the vestibule of the vagina.

Male causes include:

• impotence
• gross penile malformation
• ignorance / inexperience

Female causes include:

• malformations of the femal genital tract: - vaginal atresia - imperforate hymen
• local disease of the pelvic organs
• psychosomatic disturbance
