Hyperuricaemia and renal failure often co-exist. The hyperuricaemia may be the result of renal failure or may be its cause, for example in:
- the use of cytotoxic drugs in lymphoproliferative or myeloproliferative disorders
- muscle necrosis e.g. in crush syndrome
- inherited diseases e.g. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, von Gierke's disease
