intralesional steroids
Last reviewed 01/2018
The injection of steroids is a therapeutic modality for a number of conditions, but most commonly for fibroproliferative scarring such as hypertrophic and keloid scars.. The most commonly used drug is triamcinalone.
Adrenal suppression is unlikely with a single administration of less than 20mg. All steroids used for intradermal administration have a low solubility to ensure gradual systemic absorption. There are a number of infrequent but troubling local side effects including pigmentary change, ulceration, telangiectasis and skin thinning (see submenu).
