Ligamentous strain: in this injury the foot is bandaged until the acute pain subsides. Movement of the foot is encouraged once pain allows.
Undisplaced fractures: swelling is counteracted by elevating the foot. A below-knee cast is applied 2-3 days later and the patient is allowed up on crutches with limited weight bearing. The patient retains the plaster for 4-6 weeks.
Fracture-dislocation: The injury is reduced under general anaesthesia. Internal fixation may be required. The patient must wear a below the knee plaster for 6-8 weeks. Once the plaster is removed then exercises of the foot, ankles and toes must be performed regularly. It may take 6-8 months for function to be regained.
