Valaciclovir is indicated for the treatment of:

• herpes zoster infection
• initial and recurrent herpes simplex infection:
• mucocutaneous
• genital

Caution is required in:

• renal failure
• pregnancy and lactation

Side-effects include:

• nausea
• diarrhoea
• abdominal pain
• neurological reactions

Dose:

• zoster: 1 g three times daily for 7 days
• simplex: 500 mg twice dialy for 5 days
