Specific complications include:
- respiratory distress syndrome
- intraventricular and intravascular haemorrhage
- thermoregulation - hypothermia - immature control system; this is very important
- fluid balance
- jaundice of prematurity
- apnoea
- infection - reduced maternal antibodies
- retinopathy of prematurity
- anaemia (often iatrogenic with repeated tests)
- hypoglycaemia
- patent ductus arteriosus
- necrotising enterocolitis
- functional ileus
- late anaemia
- feeding difficulties
