• beta blockers may be required to control toxic symptoms in the hyperthyroid phase

• pain in the thyroid - treatment is essentially symptomatic and includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents or, occasionally, glucocorticoids if the symptoms are prolonged or severe
