Injury is usually severe and associated fractures are common. Whenever there is a fracture of the femur, damage to the knee or fracture of the calcaneum, the hips should also be examined radiographically.

The patient may be shocked as a result of bleeding into the pelvis.

Rectal examination is essential to assess pelvic anatomy and anal tone.

The hip may be bruised and the leg held in internal rotation.

Neurological examination should assess the following nerves:

  • sciatic þ femoral
  • obturator þ pudendal
