late clinical features

Clinical features of late syphilis do not usually occur until after 2 years of age. These take the form of stigmata relating to early damage to developing structures:

  • facial abnormalities including frontal bosses, saddle nose, protruding mandible, Hutchinson's teeth, facial gumma
  • sabre tibia - tibial periostitis
  • interstitial keratitis
  • eighth nerve deafness
  • periostitis and Clutton's joints
  • juvenile neurosyphilis
  • paroxysmal cold haemoglobulinuria
