insertion and removal

Last reviewed 01/2018

The six flexible tubes which make up the implant contraceptive are inserted in a fan-shaped pattern in the upper, inner part of the woman's non-dominant arm. Aseptic technique and a local anaesthetic is required.

Overall, insertion typically takes 10-15 minutes and removal 20-30 minutes. Once in place, Norplant can be removed at any time, the contraceptive effect stopping within days. After insertion, the woman is reviewed at three months and then after each consecutive year. Arrangements must be made to replace or remove the ineffective implant at five years.
