Possible causes include:

  • subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord
  • motor neurone disease
  • syphilis (taboparesis)
  • combined conus medullaris and cauda equina lesions
  • Friedreich's ataxia
  • combination of common problems e.g. diabetic peripheral neuropathy and cervical spondylosis
