Causes in the neonate include:-

• any cause of respiratory distress syndrome
• any cause of cyanotic heart disease

Causes in the infant include:-

• any cause of cyanotic heart disease
• any other sort of respiratory compromise, for example asthma, bronchiolitis etc.
