Causes include:
- prematurity
- birth asphyxia
- birth trauma with or without intraventricular haemorrhage
- hypoglycaemia
- hypocalcaemia
- infection
- maternal sedation which continues into neonatal life
- hypothermia
- hypovolaemia
- anaemia
