This condition is sporadic in most cases.

However, the following associations have been noted:

• Down's syndrome - particularly atrioventricular canal
• Holt-Oram syndrome - particularly secundum defect
• Ellis-van Creveld
• maternal atrial septal defect may be inherited by daughters
