The common causes of papilloedema include:

  • raised intracranial pressure:

    • space-occupying lesions:
      • tumours, primary and secondary
      • abscesses
      • haematoma

    • hydrocephalus:
      • any space-occupying lesion
      • subarachnoid haemorrhage
      • meningitis
      • head injury

    • venous sinus thrombosis
    • benign intracranial hypertension

  • malignant hypertension

  • central retinal vein occlusion
