Investigations include:

  • chest radiology - no characteristic pattern; may be segmental, diffuse, homogeneous or miliary;
  • WBC - normal or moderately decreased during acute phase of disease; may rise during convalescence
  • ESR - often normal
  • liver function tests - often normal even when hepatomegaly present
  • rising titre of complement fixing antibody is the only definitive test
