The pathway for hearing is described below:
- pathway originates in the organ of Corti, the cochlear, and the spiral ganglion
- fibres travel in the auditory nerve to one dorsal and two ventral nuclei on each side
- from these nuclei the fibres project through the lateral lemniscus - there is some decussation to the inferior colliculus and the medial geniculate body
- the superior temporal gyrus is the final common pathway
- some fibres synapse within the superior olive
