The pathway for hearing is described below:

  • pathway originates in the organ of Corti, the cochlear, and the spiral ganglion
  • fibres travel in the auditory nerve to one dorsal and two ventral nuclei on each side
  • from these nuclei the fibres project through the lateral lemniscus - there is some decussation to the inferior colliculus and the medial geniculate body
  • the superior temporal gyrus is the final common pathway
  • some fibres synapse within the superior olive
