Brain damage can be subdivided into primary and secondary, depending on when it occurs with respect to the original injury.
Primary brain damage is a result of cerebral contusion or diffuse axonal injury.
Secondary brain damage can be a result of:
- Intracranial factors:
- haematoma - extradural, subdural
- brain swelling
- subarachnoid haemorrhage
- hydrocephalus
- Extracranial factors:
- hypoxaemia
- hypotension
