bloody diarrhoea (infective)
Last reviewed 01/2018
Some of the infectious causes of bloody diarrhoa are:
- Salmonella
- Shigella
- Campylobacter jejuni
- Yersinia enterocolitica
- E. coli
- Entamoeba histolytica
Note that Clostridium difficile may cause pseudomembranous colitis following antibiotic therapy due to toxin production. Antibiotics that may result in pseudomembranous colitis include ampicillin, lincomycin, clindamycin. If C. difficile is present as a commensal then the cytotoxin is not present.
Note that non-infective aetiologies such as inflammatory bowel disease may present with bloody diarrhoea.
salmonellosis excluding enteric fevers (S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi)
