inferior vena cava valve (anatomy)
Last reviewed 01/2018
The valve of the inferior vena cava is a rudimentary fold present at the anteroinferior margin of the IVC orifice within the right atrium. Laterally, it is attached to the inferior part of the crista terminalis. Medially, it extends superiorly to merge posterior to the orifice of the coronary sinus with the the anterior margin of the limbus fossae ovalis.
In adults, the valve is an overgrowth of the endocardium that serves little purpose. During development, the valve is relatively large and has a crucial role in deflecting the flow of blood from the inferior vena cava through the foramen ovale.
