Intra-ocular inflammation such as anterior uveitis may elevate intra-ocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork may be damaged directly by the inflammatory process, or indirectly, as a result of the accumulation of inflammatory material. The angle remains open.
Peripheral anterior synechiae may close the angle partially or totally.
Treatment is directed towards the cause. Topical steroids are used to reduce inflammation but it must be noted that they may raise intra-ocular pressure if used for longer than 6 weeks in some susceptible individuals.
Peripheral anterior synechiae require surgical removal.
